Building a Concrete Commitment to Sustainability.

Prologis UK has been at the forefront of the construction and logistics sector for over a decade due to its ongoing commitment to excel in sustainability. Since 2005, the developer has been committed to embedding sustainability into the design and construction process from concept to delivery, as well as its engagement with the local community and the supply chain, “before it became popular”.

Determined to create the most sustainable portfolio globally, Prologis UK recognised the need to quantify their efforts and partnered with Planet Mark in 2008 to support their work to minimise their negative environmental impact.

Verifying Sustainability: Prologis’ Journey with Planet Mark

Over a decade ago, Prologis UK wanted to be a sustainability leader in the construction industry. So, along with Planet Mark, they began spearheading sustainability in commercial buildings by measuring and reducing whole-life carbon emissions, in particular embodied carbon of its developments. Working with our robust Development Certification they decided to amplify their environmental efforts with a commitment to measuring the whole life carbon of their developments, something they’ve continued to verify with every project since.

Planet Mark certification gave Prologis UK the confidence they needed to communicate their environmental actions, with confidence, supported with data and underpinned by clear, well-established and reputable sustainability frameworks. Over the last decade, Prologis UK and Planet Mark have forged a partnership with carbon reduction and continuous improvement at its heart; demonstrating the far reaching impacts that can be delivered when businesses take responsibility for their carbon emissions. The partnership has been recognised by edie as a finalist in the Partnership and Collaboration of the Year Awards, 2024, recognising outstanding collaboration in action.

Planet Mark’s ability to be there as an incredibly credible organisation, to provide that robust measurement and verification, has been absolutely crucial to everything we’ve done”. – Paul Weston, Regional Head, Prologis UK

Now, around two-thirds of Prologis’s developments are Planet Mark certified. Across 88 projects, they have reduced the whole-life carbon per project by 28% and saved 630,297 tons of C02, that is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 122,640 homes for an entire year.

Additionally, every new building Prologis UK develops will be certified by Planet Mark, ensuring the company can build their sustainable development portfolio.

“Planet Mark’s Development Certification has given us the opportunity to unlock clear sustainability specifications on all new Prologis UK construction projects, delivering quantifiable embodied and operational carbon reductions”. – Simon Cox, Senior Vice President and Head of the UK Development Management Team

In 2011, Prologis UK elevated its commitment to sustainability with Planet Mark’s Business Certification to ensure that, like their developments, they were working to reduce their business’s carbon footprint.

Their continuous work to decarbonise their buildings and business has captured the attention and support of stakeholders, including investors, suppliers, and customers, who are increasingly embracing and applauding Prologis’ sustainability efforts. In turn, Prologis UK has motivated its supply chain partners to follow suit. Many of which have committed to annual reductions in their operational carbon footprint with Planet Mark.

Powering Progress: Prologis’ Electric and Solar-powered

Prologis UK has committed to ensuring that all its construction projects will be 100% electric-powered, alongside introducing renewable energy systems and electric vehicle charging to their new developments. They recently started bringing this vision to fruition, with every new Prologis UK building constructed in the last year now equipped with rooftop solar panels, which customers are able to expand on based on their own energy usage profile. Additionally, they are planning to retrofit existing buildings with solar panels.

As well as installing LED lighting throughout all their new buildings, an energy-efficient light source, Prologis UK use lighting control systems which activate on movement to reduce energy consumption. Further, they have developed buildings with high levels of natural light by increasing the area of roof lights installed, resulting in improved ‘daylight harvesting’.

Prologis’ Path to Positive Change: Merging Sustainability and Social Responsibility

Prologis UK places ESG at the heart of its sustainability strategy, extending its commitment beyond environmental initiatives and emphasising impactful social actions.

Partnering with Planet Mark and the Eden Project, Prologis UK has run nearly 200 sustainability classes for primary school children. These sessions aim to educate future consumers on how to adapt their behaviours for a sustainable future and inspire their parents to do the same. So far, more than 10,000 students have participated, equipped with the knowledge and tools to champion sustainability.

Supporting the global mission to protect endangered rainforests and increase our biodiversity efforts, Prologis UK has been working with Planet Mark Charity partner Cool Earth. Working with Cool Earth, they have protected over 18,000 acres of rainforest (roughly the size of Manhattan Island) and supported indigenous communities across Peru and Papua.

Prologis’ Net Zero Commitment: Leading the Way in Logistics and Construction

Striving to be a global leader in the logistics and construction sector, Prologis is committed to being net zero by 2040 across its global portfolio.

In addition to this, Prologis UK has set a target to produce beyond net zero buildings that achieve BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification, with five completed and one in the pipeline. (An outstanding certification from BREEAM is awarded to projects that achieve a minimum score of 85% and meet the criteria by demonstrating groundbreaking and pioneering practices that set new standards for sustainability within the industry, including holding a EPC A+ rating).

Working with Planet Mark to successfully place the planet and people first has secured Prologis’s place as a leader. The partnership stands as a testament to their commitment to sustainable and net zero buildings. It underscores their industry leadership and resonates with their customers, supply chain partners, and the communities they serve.

We’re excited for the next decade of action with Prologis UK.
