FAQs
What is Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR)?
The UK government introduced its Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) policy in April 2019 to encourage action towards a low-carbon economy.
How do I comply with SECR?
Under the scheme, businesses required to comply must annually report on energy emissions and Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
How does SECR relate to other reporting schemes?
SECR builds on but does not replace several other emissions reporting requirements, which remain active:
- The Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS)
- Climate Change Agreements (CCA) Scheme
- EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS)
- Mandatory greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting for quoted companies
How do I know if my company qualifies for SECR?
The scheme applies to all UK companies that meet two or more of the following criteria in a financial year:
- More than 250 employees
- Over £36m annual turnover
- Over £18m on annual balance sheet
What are the business benefits of SECR compliance?
The introduction of SECR could deliver a potential £1.5 billion of value to society through carbon savings, improved air quality, and reduced noise pollution.
