Certification story

Fieldfisher LLP, an enterprising European law firm built around people with market-leading practices in our four key sectors of energy and natural resources, technology, financial services and life sciences, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

This is Fieldfisher LLP’s third year of business carbon footprint reporting and Planet Mark certification. Fieldfisher recognises the urgency of the climate crisis. The firm believes it is imperative they contribute to a sustainable future by reducing the environmental impact of its activities across the Fieldfisher network. In 2019, the firm launched ‘Rooting for Change’, its first reforestation programme. The firm and its staff funded the planting of over 6,500 trees in India. The firm also collaborates with environmental and conservation charities on capacity-building pro bono projects.

Over the next few years, it will continue to work towards reducing its carbon emissions and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, the company will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.

Planet Mark
“Fieldfisher has made an incredible difference to its emissions in its second year of Planet Mark certification. On a global level, we need to move beyond pledges and into concrete action, and Fieldfisher has executed this fantastically. This requires a team to work together, across the whole business, to create positive change at scale. I’m so pleased with their actions this year, and look forward to helping them realise their net zero future.”

Douglas Peniston, Operations Director at Fieldfisher, commented: “In 2020, businesses were forced to change their way of working overnight. Our carbon footprint reduced significantly and law firms now need to leverage these opportunities and learnings to inform strategy and foster sustainable change going forward. It’s no easy feat to become a net zero firm but that is our goal and we are working with Planet Mark to achieve this as soon as possible. Planet Mark is supporting us to be transparent as we tackle the challenge and find a way to meet the needs of our stakeholders and our planet on the road to net zero.”

Going beyond

Through Planet Mark, Fieldfisher has protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It has also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year Fieldfisher must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
