Regular Cleaning: Redefining what’s possible in commercial cleaning

When Regular Cleaning was launched by Terry Carrigan in 1969, it set itself apart – not just through great service, but by putting people and values at the heart of everything. Fast forward over five decades, and that people-first, purpose-led ethos still defines how the business operates.  Today, Regular Cleaning is an established leader in commercial cleaning and a pioneer in sustainability.

From sustainability ambitions to measurable action

Before becoming a Planet Mark Member, Regular Cleaning already had strong environmental credentials: ISO 14001 certification, chemical-free cleaning solutions, and a strong focus on continually improving environmental performance.

But as the business matured, it recognised a key challenge: understanding its full carbon footprint – especially Scope 3 emissions across its supply chain. To meet its ambitious sustainability goals, Regular Cleaning needed a partner that could deliver trusted data, technical support, and a clear roadmap to net zero.

“Planet Mark felt like an obvious partner to help us gather the right data and provide a structured roadmap to enable us to accelerate our sustainability journey. We also felt a strong cultural fit with Planet Mark,” explains Chris Cain, ESG Director at Regular Cleaning.

In January 2021, Regular Cleaning became a Planet Mark Member, earning its first certification just a few months later. What followed was a complete transformation of how the company understood, measured, and managed sustainability.

Key achievements to date

  • Fully electric fleet since March 2025
  • Zero Scope 1 & 2 emissions (using a market-based methodology) at their Service Support Centre (SSC) since 2023
  • Planet Mark Sustainability Reporting Award (2024) and Planet Mark Supply Chain Engagement Award (2023)
  • 30.6% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions compared to 2023 base year (using a market-based methodology)

A new milestone: Net Zero Committed

Having proactively embarked on its net zero strategy in 2021 and committed to its current net zero targets in 2024, the commercial cleaning company continues to elevate its sustainability journey by becoming a Planet Mark Certified Net Zero Committed Business. The Net Zero Committed status reflects the company’s credible approach to net zero and its dedication to robust and meaningful climate action.

As part of the Net Zero Committed Certification membership package, Regular Cleaning is being guided by a clear Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT) aligned transition plan and is committed to achieving net zero by 2040 from a 2023 base year. This ongoing commitment signals Regular Cleaning’s determination to progress on its transformative carbon reduction journey in line with a 1.5 degree pathway.

Data that drives accountability

Planet Mark’s measurement has enabled Regular Cleaning to make commercially strategic decisions through the lens of sustainability. Quarterly emissions reviews, supplier data sharing, and dashboard transparency has become standard.

“Planet Mark’s Scope 3 support in particular has been invaluable – it gives us trusted, verified data that becomes a key business differentiator,” adds Chris.

That data has had real-world impacts – enabling Regular Cleaning to identify inefficiencies, track progress, and improve decision-making. Purchased goods and services, once a major emissions source, were addressed early.

Leadership beyond cleaning

With Planet Mark’s help, the company has hosted supplier engagement workshops and training, showcase events, and client roundtables – all designed to foster collaboration and share best practice.

Partners like Wessex Cleaning and Mayflower Washrooms are now on their own Planet Mark journeys. Its collaborative model earned Regular Cleaning the 2023 Planet Mark Supply Chain Engagement Award – and it’s still growing.

Innovation in motion

Sustainability isn’t an add-on at Regular Cleaning – it’s embedded into operations:

  • Deployed 8 EV charging points at HQ
  • Introduced cycling and low-carbon delivery options
  • Standardised the use of chemical-free multipurpose cleaner
  • Refurbished the head office to reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions
  • Adopted new equipment that reduces water and chemical use

These innovations not only reduce emissions but enhance service quality, setting a new standard in the industry.

Sustainability is driving business growth

Chris Goad, Chief Executive Officer at Regular Cleaning, emphasises how sustainability is giving the company a competitive edge. “We are able to give our clients what other businesses can’t: we can evidence that we are taking action on our carbon reduction goals. The competitive advantage has been significant. Over the past two to three years, we’ve seen substantial growth, driven largely by our clear roadmap that demonstrates our sustainability journey.”

Building a transparent culture

In 2024, Regular Cleaning received the Planet Mark Sustainability Reporting Award – a reflection of their honest, data-led approach to climate action.

Through Town Halls, dashboards, and sustainability workshops, the company ensures that everyone – from senior leadership to frontline staff – is part of the journey. Luke Bowers, Chief Commercial Officer at Regular Cleaning explains the benefits of this transparent culture, “People want to work for us because we’re a sustainable business. Our retention is strong which in turn reduces the cost of recruitment; this is a hidden cost that we would confront if we weren’t on a net zero journey.”

What’s next?

Regular Cleaning’s sustainability goals are ambitious – but achievable, with the right support:

  • Evolving their product selection to support more sustainable, informed choices
  • Quarterly emissions reviews to guide business decisions
  • More tailored training for colleagues, service partners, and clients

And with every step, the company is inspiring others to follow.
