SECR Starter Guide - Planet Mark

Who needs to comply with SECR?

You may need to produce a SECR report if you are a quoted UK company, a large UK incorporated unquoted firm, or you fulfil at least two of the following conditions in the financial year that you would be reporting on:

  • Over 250 employees
  • Over £36 million annual turnover
  • Over £18 million total on the annual balance sheet

These conditions apply even if you are a subsidiary company with a parent company not registered in the UK.

Some organisations are exempt from meeting SECR, such as those that use less than 40,000 kWh of energy within the reporting year. These organisations will, however, need to disclose themselves as low energy users within their annual financial report.

What are the SECR reporting requirements?

When it comes to SECR reporting, you need to meet two requirements: you must include the report in your organisation’s annual financial report, and submit it to Companies House.

You will also need to disclose some essential information. This includes your:

  • Energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the previous year
  • Annual Scope 1 and 2 emissions
  • Scope 3 emissions (this is currently voluntary, but strongly recommended)

SECR reporting requirements may vary according to your organisation. When you become a Planet Mark Member, we can help you to produce SECR-compliant reports based on the requirements that apply to you.

How can Planet Mark help with SECR reporting?

We support organisations to measure, reduce, and report on their energy consumption with our annual membership solution, the Net Zero Certification Programme.

Guiding you through four certified milestones, the Programme comes with wrap-around support and resources to help you make meaningful climate action – and disclose it credibly.

We’ll empower you with:

Full measurement of your Scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions.

You’ll determine your emissions baseline, before gathering all the Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions data needed to measure your full environmental impact.

This includes your organisation’s energy usage, but goes beyond this to cover your waste, fleet emissions, purchased goods and services, and more.

Data-backed targets to reduce your energy and emissions.

You’ll set near- and long-term targets for reducing your emissions, including your organisation’s energy usage.

We’ll also help you to achieve them on your journey to net zero. For instance, by supporting you to make measurable energy savings. Or, by bringing your stakeholders, employees, and suppliers in on your climate goals.

Transparent, SECR-compliant carbon reporting.

You’ll share your carbon reduction progress credibly, authentically, and in line with SECR reporting requirements.

The Net Zero Certification Programme includes everything you need to communicate your sustainability story – from marketing materials to a team of dedicated policy experts.
