ISO 14064 – 1, 2 & 3 (Greenhouse Gas Requirements)
Report in line with ISO 14064 with Planet Mark
ISO 14064 is a series of standards for quantifying and reporting on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals (a “GHG inventory”).
It consists of three parts: ISO 14064-1 (Organisational Emissions), ISO 14064-2 (Project Emissions), and ISO 14064-3 (Verification). Combined, these set out the requirements for designing, developing, managing, reporting, and verifying GHG inventories at an organisational and project level.
Keep reading to learn more about the standards, and how Planet Mark can help you to produce compliant disclosures.

ISO 14064 standards, explained
There are three parts to ISO 14064, each one containing a different set of requirements related to GHG emissions:
ISO 14064-1:2018 – Organisational Emissions
The principles and requirements for designing, developing, managing and reporting a GHG inventory at an organisational level.
ISO 14064-2:2019 – Project Emissions
The principles and requirements for determining a project’s baseline of emissions, and monitoring, quantifying and reporting them.
ISO 14064-3:2019 – Verification
The requirements for verifying GHG inventories and GHG statements of projects and products.

Should you adhere to ISO 14064?
Is meeting ISO 14064 mandatory?
Using the ISO 14064 standards to develop, manage, and report on your GHG inventory is voluntary.
However, we’ve seen an increase in organisations asking clients to prove that they are measuring and reducing their GHG emissions using international standards and methodologies.
So, although meeting the standards isn’t a legal obligation, you may see it become a mandatory part of your contracts as a supplier.
What are the benefits of meeting ISO 14064 standards?
Set data-backed decisions.
- The standards give you a clear, consistent way to measure your GHG emissions. In turn, they allow you to make data-backed decisions about where and how to remove carbon from your organisation or project.
Communicate your progress, credibly.
- Aligning with these internationally recognised standards demonstrates your commitment to making measurable climate action. It’s a credible way to communicate your sustainability progress to stakeholders, investors, and customers.
Meet customer and tender demands.
- Reporting on your GHG emissions in line with ISO 14064 may help you to stay competitive as a supplier. As many organisations face legal and public pressure to become environmentally responsible, we’re already seeing tenders and requests for proposals include more stringent carbon reporting requirements.
What’s the difference between the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064?
Like ISO 14064, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol is a set of standards for measuring, reducing, and reporting on GHG emissions. However, there are some key differences between the two.
One of the main differences is that the GHG Protocol provides more comprehensive guidance. For example, it offers a range of frameworks for specific situations and use cases, like the GHG Value Chain Standards for carbon accounting across supply chains.
Another key difference is that ISO 14064 places more emphasis upon third-party verification. Unlike with the GHG Protocol, you can receive certification to verify that you’ve met the requirements of the ISO standards.

Is ISO 14064 a type of certification?
ISO 14064 is a set of standards designed to help organisations quantify and report on GHG emissions; not a type of certification.
However, you may receive the certification if you hire a third party to verify your GHG inventory and reporting as compliant.

How can Planet Mark help with ISO 14064?
We support organisations to measure, reduce, and produce ISO 14064-compliant disclosures of their carbon emissions with our annual membership solution, the Net Zero Certification Programme.
With four certified milestones, the Programme empowers organisations to achieve net zero by 2050 or sooner, comply with the reporting standards relevant to them, and communicate their progress credibly.
Here are four steps to preparing for ISO 14064, and how the Net Zero Certification Programme can help.
1. Develop a GHG inventory by calculating your GHG emissions –> We’ll help you to calculate your organisation’s baseline of carbon emissions, measure them year on year, and identify the carbon hotspots that need to be tackled.
2. Invest in tools to streamline your data collection and reporting –> Our Data Platform makes it easy to collect and submit your carbon emissions data. It tells you exactly what data is needed for our in-house measurement experts to produce a full emissions report.
3. Set clear, actionable goals for reducing your emissions –> We’ll work with you to set near- and long-term targets for achieving net zero, tailored to the needs of your organisation and supply chain. We’ll also provide guidance on reducing your carbon and meeting these goals.
4. Share your progress with your stakeholders –> We’ll empower you to share your sustainability progress in line with ISO 14064, CSRD, SECR, and many other voluntary and mandatory reporting standards.
