Each year millions of people take part in Earth Day on April 22 to promote environmental awareness and activism. Earth Day has always been about taking action – whether you’re an individual or an organisation. The day encourages us to take meaningful action to protect the earth.
The mission of Earth Day is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. As the biggest climate crisis facing our planet gets closer to breaking point, now is the time to act!
What is Earth Day?
Earth Day is a global celebration of our planet, which provides an opportunity to raise awareness about environmental issues and solutions and a chance to get involved in local projects that make a difference in your community.
In 1970, John McConnell founded Earth Day to raise awareness around environmental concerns such as pollution and overpopulation. Now, 20 million people participate globally! Since then, it has been celebrated annually, around the world, with events ranging from tree plantings to beach clean-ups and rallies protesting against global warming or deforestation practices.
Why is Earth Day important for the climate crisis?
We have less than a decade to halt the climate crisis. Businesses can use Earth Day to reflect on what they are doing now, and what they can do moving forward to invest in our planet and reduce their impact on the climate crisis.
Planet Mark believes that businesses have an opportunity to make meaningful impact on our climate by achieving net zero and reducing their carbon emissions.
We have seen first-hand how businesses are making a meaningful impact today and investing in our planet. On average, our members reduce their annual carbon emissions by 11% and strive for continuous improvements to ensure they achieve carbon reductions each year. They are also seeing how driving sustainability throughout their business can lead to commercial benefits such as lowered operational costs and higher employee retention.
Businesses proactively working to become more sustainable can experience increased brand advocacy, a healthy bottom line and a purpose-led culture – all working to support long-term commercial resilience.
It’s time to make Earth Day 2023 a year of change. Planet Mark is calling businesses to act now, invest in our planet and make the transition to net zero this Earth Day.
