Allwyn UK’s journey to net zero with Planet Mark
We are delighted that our member Allwyn UK featured in BusinessGreen for its commitment to grow The National Lottery responsibly, and embed net zero principles and social value at the heart of the organisation.
Allwyn UK will take over the operation of The National Lottery from 1 February 2024, with Planet Mark as its trusted partner to progress The National Lottery’s journey to net zero.
Sustainability leadership
Harriet Jameson, Director of Social Value at Allwyn UK, has been the driving force behind implementing Planet Mark’s ‘strategy-into-action’ roadmap which combines a series of solutions across three key activation levers: measurement and target setting, engagement and communications, and decarbonisation initiatives to address carbon hotspots.
Harriet has worked on Allwyn UK’s quest to drive a positive environmental impact across the UK from the outset of the company’s bid to operate The National Lottery. However, the commitment to achieve this ambition is woven into the fabric of the business and is owned at every level, from the Board down.
Overcoming the challenge of limited data
To secure The National Lottery bid, Allwyn UK had to demonstrate a plan for adding social value to the UK, beyond the benefits derived from operating the lottery itself. The organisation made the decision to include the transition towards net zero as one of the pillars in its Social Value strategy, incorporating it into the bid commitments.
Our Strategy Consultants worked with Allwyn UK to produce analysis of other lottery providers and to confirm its net zero ambitions, so that the Gambling Commission could have confidence in the company’s plans.
Allwyn UK was delighted with Planet Mark’s support, with Harriet saying in BusinessGreen’s article, “Planet Mark really helped us scratch the surface and [The Gambling Commission] were confident that with the data we had available to us and via Planet Mark we had dug deep enough to say, ‘these are the commitments we can make’.”
Robust measurement
Allwyn UK is kicking off its sustainability journey with Planet Mark by measuring scopes 1 and 2 emissions, as well as core elements of scope 3, for reporting year 2023 to achieve Business Certification; this data will help us identify carbon hotspots under operational control. The company has made a commitment that, by 2030, it will have reduced all emissions under operational control (scopes 1 and 2) to zero.
Allwyn UK will then work with Planet Mark to progress to measuring its complete baseline carbon footprint for 2024, its first year of operating The National Lottery, including the very significant impacts of its whole value chain. It will then be able to set near-term net zero targets and evaluate options for long-term targets, consistent with achieving goals set out in the Paris Agreement.
Taking decisive action towards net zero
Weaving sustainability into the fabric of its business is a priority and the organisation has pledged to carry out a multitude of decarbonisation projects.
To drive its net zero goals forward, Allwyn UK will eliminate gas from its operations, source 100% renewable energy and transition to a zero-carbon company fleet, powered by 100% renewable electricity by 2030.
Planet Mark also stepped in to conduct a series of building audits for the company’s Watford offices to offer energy efficiency solutions, and to help drive reductions in scopes 1 and 2 emissions. To make deep cuts in its scope 3 emissions, Allwyn is developing an upskilling programme to help smaller and unique suppliers set their own net zero targets, and Planet Mark is looking forward to engaging with Allwyn UK’s Contract Managers later this year in a Net Zero Masterclass workshop.
The Allwyn UK team is seizing the opportunity to integrate sustainability at every level, setting the stage for a remarkable journey ahead. This commitment extends to providing training in net zero carbon fundamentals for all employees.
