We often hear confusion between net zero and carbon neutral; these terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they do not have the same meaning. Here’s a clear overview to help you understand the difference.
Carbon neutral
Carbon neutrality means balancing any greenhouse gas emissions produced by removing or offsetting an equivalent amount from the atmosphere, for example, through carbon capture and reforestation that is supported by carbon credit schemes. Achieving carbon neutrality does not necessarily mean that direct emission reductions have taken place. Becoming a carbon neutral business is a good step on the sustainability journey, but it is not the end goal.
ISO 14068 is the recognised framework for achieving carbon neutrality.
Net zero
Net zero is the end goal and means cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions reabsorbed from the atmosphere.
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) launched the world’s first framework for net zero target setting in October 2021. The SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard requires organisations to reduce Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions to as close to zero as possible, and by at least 90%. Only the remaining maximum 10% of ‘unavoidable’ residual emissions may be neutralised using accredited carbon removal offsetting schemes to achieve net zero. The world needs to reach net zero by around 2050 if it is to meet the Paris Agreement Target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
The steps to achieving net zero are:
- Measuring Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions across your operations and value chain.
- Setting near-term and long-term net zero targets.
- Reducing emissions by at least 90% from your net zero baseline.
- Neutralising any residual emissions that cannot be eliminated, using accredited carbon removal offsets.
See our recent guide explaining more on what net zero means for businesses, here.
Why It Matters
Sustainability is increasingly becoming a critical expectation. Many companies are engaging with their suppliers to understand their environmental commitments and requesting evidence of:
- A carbon footprint broken down by Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions
- Public reporting of GHG emissions
- Net zero targets
- A carbon reduction plan/ Net Zero Transition Plan
- Governance of sustainability
Even if you aren’t legally required to report emissions yet, customers, partners, and investors increasingly expect evidence of action, not just pledges.
UK Government’s Net Zero Target and Strategy
The UK Government has committed to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with decarbonisation pathways and policies driving emissions reduction across every sector.
At COP29 in Baku, countries updated their national commitments (NDCs) as part of their pathway to net zero. The UK set an interim target to reduce emissions by 81% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels. The summit also highlighted the growing importance of transparent reporting, robust carbon markets, and dedicated support for SMEs as critical players in the transition.
