Certification story

Suttons Seeds, a supplier of flower and vegetable seeds, young plants, bulbs, fruit bushes and other horticultural products to amateur gardeners, has achieved certification to Planet Mark.

This is Suttons Seeds’ first year of business carbon footprint reporting and certification to The Planet Mark. Suttons Seeds’ total carbon footprint in year ending July 2019 was 417.2 tCO2e and the relative carbon footprint was 2.8 tCO2e per employee.

It has calculated the carbon footprint of its Woodview Road, Preston Down Road, and Okehampton operational sites for the year ending July 2019 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually. This year’s footprint includes emissions from purchased electricity, electricity transmission and distribution losses, water, natural gas, waste, fleet, and business travel for its operational sites. Electricity accounts for 28% of the total carbon emissions and natural gas accounts for 22%.

“Suttons Seeds is doing sustainability right, and I’m delighted to have the company on board to further its sustainability journey. It is evident to see that the whole team is bought into the ideals of a modern, low carbon business, and I look forward to seeing the results of Suttons’ stellar ambition.”

Certification story

First year certification to The Planet Mark is based on a commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in business operations Suttons Seeds has committed to measuring and reducing its carbon footprint, and to engaging its stakeholders.

Founded in 1806 Suttons has over 200 years of gardening experience, having built an enviable reputation for quality products, and has been respected as the Royal Warrant holders to the Monarchy from 1858 to the present day.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything Suttons does and it is committed to doing its bit for the planet. The company has made some brilliant strides towards being more sustainable. This includes working with retail seed partners to save the unnecessary destruction of over 1 million seed packets per year through a ‘Partial Returns’ policy to installing solar panels on its warehouse for locally sourced, renewable energy, and switching to 100% peat-free compost in its own nurseries.

Horticultural businesses are well placed to make an impact on climate change. Opportunities to reduce carbon through local produce, change of energy systems and supply chain management can deliver sustainable products to a consumer base increasingly concerned with the ethical quality of the products it buys. From supplying sustainable food to helping create flourishing habitats for wildlife, horticulture can make positive change in a sustainable manner.

Future targets
