Certification story

Sleepeezee, manufacturer of high quality handmade beds since 1924 and Royal Warrant holders from HRH The Prince of Wales, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

Achieving the Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

This is Sleepeezee’s fourth year of carbon reporting with Planet Mark. Over the next year, the company will be working towards reducing its carbon emissions and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, it will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“Well done to everyone at Sleepeezee on a fantastic year of sustainable change. As a Royal Warrant holder, Sleepeezee’s customers expect the very best – in their products, service, and in their environmental footprint. The developments made by the Sleepeezee team show its customers that the company is walking the walk on climate. I’m proud to work with Sleepeezee to create positive change in their business.”
Andrew Reene
Health & Safety and Sustainability Manager
“Sleepeezee want to make sure that our customers are able to rest easily at night. We feel an important element to that is to let our customers know that they are sleeping on a mattress produced by a responsible manufacturer, who is actively working on lowering carbon emissions.”

Andrew added “Being a member of the Planet Mark demonstrates that commitment to lowering carbon emissions.  It also gives us access to knowledge and expertise not only through their team but via the Planet Mark Community.  Being able to collaborate with the Planet Mark team & other Planet Mark members allows us all to move towards the shared goal of a de-carbonised future.”

Sleepeezee understands that its customers match its awareness of environmental issues. As well as becoming the first UK mattress manufacturer to achieve Planet Mark certification, it is recognised by the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme for its work in sustainability. It supports initiatives to limit its reliance on fossil fuels, clean its supply chain and offset its operational emissions. The company has also switched to 100% renewable electricity in October 2019.

As consumers increasingly demand environmentally friendly produce, B2C businesses must embrace sustainability to thrive in the modern world. From measuring and reducing its own impact on the environment to engaging its supply chain and stakeholder network, a modern business can’t rely solely on quality products, it must also ensure those products haven’t caused undue harm to the planet. Targeted and scientific sustainability policies are the only way to accurately respond to the demands of the modern consumer.

Going beyond

Through Planet Mark, the company has protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth directly supports the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It has also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year Sleepeezee must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
