Certification story

RPC, a professional services firm based in the UK and Asia that applies smart thinking to deliver legal and consultancy solutions, has achieved certification to the Planet Mark. Achieving Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

This is RPC’s third year of business carbon footprint reporting and certification to The Planet Mark. It first calculated the carbon footprint of its London and Bristol operational sites for the year ending December 2019 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.

Over the next year, the company will continue to reduce its carbon emissions and share its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, RPC will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.

Steve Malkin
CEO
Planet Mark
“I am so pleased to witness the first steps of carbon measurement and reduction at RPC. As on many journeys, the first step is the most important, and making a commitment to continuous reductions in carbon emissions shows the seriousness with which RPC is taking its carbon reduction. With the Planet Mark, RPC can tell its sustainability story throughout its global network of stakeholders and staff to make change well beyond the remit of its own offices. It’s an exciting prospect that can create a lot of positive outcomes.”

RPC has a number of initiatives, beyond the pledge to consistently reduce its carbon footprint, to help it become more sustainable. RPC has a dedicated steering group of lawyers and support staff working to promote the importance of corporate social responsibility and the firm’s values both internally and externally. This team won CSR initiative of the year at the British Insurance Awards in 2014. The firm also has three CSR workstreams dedicated to pro bono work in areas of the environment, charity and community. Its offices at Tower Bridge House are state of the art, designed with sustainability in mind, and the firm has planted over 10,000 trees to offset the impact of its relocation.

Business is changing, and companies in professional services must be proactive to stay ahead of the curve. As companies recognise their responsibility in creating a healthier environment, there is an increasing expectation of sustainability in a business’ supply chain. Professional services companies must see this change in demand as an opportunity to demonstrate their own sustainable credentials to remain attractive to new and existing clients.

Future targets

As part of the Planet Mark certification, RPC has committed to making a year-on-year reduction.
