Rowlinson Knitwear, the UK’s market leader in the manufacturing of personalised, high quality school knitwear and premium corporate wear, has achieved Planet Mark certification.
This is Rowlinson Knitwear’s third year of business carbon footprint reporting and certification to Planet Mark. It first calculated the carbon footprint of its Stockport site operations for the year ending November 2018 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.
Rowlinson Knitwear’s total location-based carbon footprint in the year ending November 2020 was 383.9 tCO2e, a decrease of 41.1% from the year ending 2019. The relative location-based carbon footprint was 6.34 tCO2e per employee, a decrease of 42.9% compared to the year ending 2019.
Rowlinson has saved the same amount of carbon as preventing nearly 134 tonnes of coal from being burned.
“Rowlinson is committed to doing things the right way. The company has a laudable perspective on sustainability, understanding that a business can create waves of change that have environmental, social and health impacts. It is unsurprising that a company with such a progressive ethos has made even more amazing progress on its carbon footprint. A 40% decrease is an incredible achievement from an inspiring company. It is a pleasure to work alongside them.”
“We’re committed to reducing our carbon emissions, so that we help to halt the climate emergency. Despite the pandemic creating a temporary reduction in carbon impact globally, we can’t rest on our laurels. Our new photovoltaic system will generate twice the power we need, with the excess going back into the grid, which is the right choice to show we care for people and the planet.”
Rowlinson Knitwear was established over 80 years ago, in 1935, as a profit driven, family-owned business and became employee-owned in 2015. The company is committed to rigorous sustainability policies with its ultimate goal of becoming a Certified B Corporation. Rowlinson Knitwear has achieved CarbonNeutral company certification through a combination of in-house efficiency measures, renewable energy use and external emissions reduction projects. With a supply chain stretching through the Philippines, Egypt and Bangladesh, the company wishes to embed a fair-for-all business philosophy, which is evidenced by it becoming a foundation member of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), and signing the Responsible Sourcing Network’s Cotton Pledges.
Businesses in the clothing industry must begin to act on carbon emissions. As well as being major emitters of carbon and waste, the industry is under growing pressure from consumers to act in a sustainable manner, for reasons as varied as workforce satisfaction to plastic pollution. The market for sustainable clothing is rapidly growing and represents a significant opportunity for clothing brands to develop with a reduced environmental impact.
As part of the Planet Mark certification, Rowlinson Knitwear has committed to make a year-on-year reduction.
