This is Oktra’s 10th year of business Carbon Footprint Reporting. Oktra’s total carbon footprint in year ending May 2019 was 60.7 tCO2e, which represents an enormous decrease of 34.5% from the year ending 2018. The relative carbon footprint was 0.3 tCO2e per employee, a decrease of 49.6% compared to the year ending 2018.
Oktra first calculated the carbon footprint of its London office and business travel for the year ending 2009 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually. This includes emissions from energy use in the building (natural gas for heating, purchased electricity and transmission and distribution losses), water, business travel, waste disposal, from the production of paper used in the offices and fleet.
Natural gas emissions decreased by 94%, waste emissions decreased by 55.8% and travel emissions decreased by 41.6%. The savings in carbon are the equivalent of 25 return flights from London to New York.
“Oktra are a stalwart of Planet Mark, so to see them making such tremendous cuts in carbon after years of efforts gives fills me with encouragement. Our offices are a huge part of our lives, our health and our wellbeing, and companies like Oktra not only help others make beautiful, sustainable offices, but every office they design has sustainability breathing through it through their outstanding commitments to tackling climate change.“

Designers need to be more conscious of sustainability in the modern world. In the decade of climate action, business of all sizes will seek to improve their workspace for the environment, and for the betterment of their staff. The challenge for designers is two-fold. First, to keep up to date with the ever developing world of sustainable design, and second, to embody those principles into its own office and work practices.
As part of the Planet Mark certification, Oktra has committed to make a year-on-year reduction.
