Certification story

Millbrook Garden Company, a retail company operating garden centres out of Crowborough, U.K., has achieved Planet Mark certification.

Achieving the Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

This is Millbrook Garden Company’s second year of business carbon footprint reporting. In this Decade of Action, the company wants to ensure that they are a force for good: positively transforming society and the planet by measuring its own impact on the environment.

Since certifying to Planet Mark, the company has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually. Over the next year, the company will be working towards reducing its carbon emissions and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, it will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.

Through Planet Mark, Millbrook Garden Company has protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth directly supports the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It has also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“Well done Millbrook Garden Company on taking an important step on your sustainability journey. Garden centres already make the planet greener, but they have work to do to ensure everything they do is sustainable. Millbrook Garden Company has recognised the importance of doing business with the planet in mind and has begun a journey to a low carbon future. I’m so pleased to have the team commit to reducing their carbon footprint, and I’m sure their customers are, too.”
Tammy Woodhouse
Managing Director
Millbrook Garden Company
“As gardeners, we care about the environment. As a business, we believe we have a responsibility to make positive changes, where we can, to protect environmental sustainability. Even small steps are important ones – mighty oak trees from little acorns grow! Millbrook is committed to finding ways in which we can work and garden more harmoniously with our planet. We are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint and impact on the environment and have partnered with Planet Mark to help us achieve this.”

Certification story

Tammy added “We have already made a start – from buying responsibly to raising awareness of greener product choices with our ‘Planet Positive’ logo, to educating with blogs and workshops on topics such as home composting as we move away from peat-based products. There is plenty more to do and we look forward to setting and achieving our goals.”

Millbrook promotes good environmental practices and environmental awareness throughout its garden centres. From electing Energy Champions to monitor energy usage, encourage saving and identify and deal with heavy usage, to actively updating its centres with low energy appliances, sustainability is embedded into the centres’ processes. The company also has set a target of 25% renewable energy generation throughout its business.

As guardians and promoters of natural products, garden centres must pay attention to developments in the sustainable world in order to stay competitive. While the wide-ranging environmental, health and social benefits to flora are well known, garden centres must remain conscious of their supply chains to make sure they are sustainable, and ethically, sourced. As modern consumer demands become increasingly conscious of a product’s source, nurseries should respond with their own rigorous and accountable approach to sustainability.
