Certification story

Men’s clothing retailer Lyle & Scott has achieved Planet Mark certification sustainability programme.

The Scottish brand has built a reputation for crafting high-quality knitwear and other men’s clothing throughout its 140 year history. This is the company’s first year of business carbon emissions reporting. The total carbon footprint of Lyle & Scott in the year ending March 2019 was 67,125 tCO2e. This represents a relative carbon footprint of 447.5 tCO2e per employee.

The nature of Lyle & Scott’s business requires a high level of transportation of goods (outbound, inbound, and inter-site) and as a result, freight related emissions account for the vast majority (99%) of the total carbon footprint. Building emissions account for 1% of the total carbon footprint.

This year’s footprint includes emissions from purchased electricity, natural gas, waste, business travel and freight transportation related to its offices, stores and warehouses, and has been calculated across the company’s six UK operational sites (Ashford, Cheshire Oaks, Edinburgh, Hawick, London, and York).

First year certification to Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

As part of the certification, Lyle & Scott has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually. By achieving its annual emissions reduction target, the menswear brand would save the equivalent carbon of 2820 return flights between London and New York. Certification also includes the protection of one acre of endangered rainforest through the award-winning charity Cool Earth and investing in the Eden Project to support continuing education on climate change.

The Planet Mark Certification is part of a wider sustainability strategy for the retailer to act responsibly, be transparent, and operate in a way that improves the lives of people and protects the planet. By the end of 2021, a minimum of 50% of its products (garments, accessories, footwear) is set to be manufactured from sustainable fabrics. They shall also introduce a sustainable grading system of the entire supply chain by 2021, as well as introducing a Repair/Recycle service to consumers for pre-loved Lyle & Scott products, or a similar project that will reduce the amount of landfill created by pre-loved garments.
