Certification story

J Browne Construction, a family-run business delivering a wide range of utility contracting services across London and the South East, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

This is J Browne Construction’s first year of business carbon footprint reporting and certification to Planet Mark. They first calculated the carbon footprint of their Enfield office for the year ending March 2020 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.

J Browne Construction’s total carbon footprint for the year ending March 2020 was 1,082.9 tCO2e and the relative carbon footprint was 27.8 tCO2e per employee.

J Browne will save the carbon footprint equivalent of 60,000lbs of burned coal if the company achieves their emissions target in the forthcoming year.

Steve Malkin
Planet Mark
“J Browne has made an important step towards a sustainable future. With important targets in place, positive environmental change can follow, and it will be felt throughout the organisation. Constructors have a special place in the fight against climate change and we need more companies like J Browne to take the initiative and realise what is good for the planet is also good for business. I commend the team on their ambition and hope this is the first step in a long and rewarding partnership.”

Certification story

J Browne is constantly looking for the areas where they can have the biggest possible impact on the environment. The company is mitigating the impact of their 100-strong fleet of vehicles by ensuring they are fuel-efficient, cyclist friendly and their usage is monitored. The company has a target to recycle 100% of its construction waste and reuse materials wherever possible. The Enfield HQ has many energy efficient systems such as movement sensitive lighting, heat thermostats, energy efficient office equipment and full recycling facilities.

The construction industry can be one of the major drivers towards a sustainable, low-carbon future. 97% of the United Kingdom’s existing building stock needs to be adapted to meet global climate change targets, so bold action and leadership are necessary to make sweeping changes to the industry’s existing practices. Measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of the entire lifecycle of our building stock is vital to both a sustainable world and meeting modern demand in construction.

Future targets

As part of the Planet Mark certification, J Browne Construction has committed to making a year-on-year reduction.
