Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“Congratulations to the team at Impress on a strong year of carbon reductions. Impress has long sought to be a leader in its industry regarding sustainability, and the progress made over the last year cements this leadership. It is a pleasure to work with companies working to pioneer best practice in their industry.”

Certification story

Impress is the first UK printer to achieve certification to the Planet Mark. Impress print has committed to protecting 44 acres of land through the World Land Trust. Its products are certified 100% free of raw materials that are of animal origin by the Vegetarian Society. Furthermore, Impress’ World Land Trust ‘carbon balanced printer’ certification recognises that the carbon impacts of the whole production of a printed item have been estimated and balanced or offset.

Businesses are quickly becoming more knowledgeable about their role in climate change, and as a result many are requiring strong sustainability standards throughout their supply chains. If you are a company servicing other businesses, demonstrating robust sustainability credentials is moving from a nice-to-have to a necessity for acquiring new business. Carbon reduction is no longer just for the planet, but for the survival of a modern business.

Case Study

Sustainability Transparency

Impress Print Services are proud to be one of only a few Carbon Balanced Printers in the UK. A printing service creates waste and carbon emissions, uses energy and needs resources such as ink, paper and packaging. Aware that their business was contributing to the climate crisis, Impress made a commitment to reduce their environmental impact while increasing their positive social impact.

Once they measured and verified their baseline carbon footprint they looked at each area of their business to see where improvements could be made, and found they were able to make some significant changes:

  • Solar renewable energy to power the office and factory
  • Recycling the majority of waste streams
  • Chlorine acid-free, recyclable, FSC® certified and carbon balanced paper
  • Vegetable and oil-based inks
  • Conserving water
  • Zero waste to landfill (Year to August 2021)
  • Low levels of industrial alcohol used in print process
  • Products chosen for longevity, upgradability and recyclability
  • Energy consumption monitored to see where reductions can be made
  • Journeys planned for efficiency
  • Move to electric fleet vehicles.
  • ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme

They found that their efforts resonated with customers who are delighted with the service that they provide and are happy to be part of the environmental solution by choosing Impress. They are able to reduce the carbon impacts of their customer’s marketing communications, supporting them, in turn, to meet their own carbon reduction objectives, sharing knowledge and understanding of print-related environmental terminology.

Impress found that actions that protect our planet make good business logic. Using fewer resources equals less waste, energy efficiency saves money and as a result, they are able to keep prices competitive and consistently improve business efficiency.

Impress also work with the World Land Trust, following a three-step process to measure and reduce, before offsetting residual emissions through the protection and restoration of carbon-rich wildlife habitats in the tropics. They run workshops for staff which help understanding of the company aims allowing employees to take ownership for their own daily environmental actions. This means the whole business is working together to make positive changes aiming to continue to make improvements year on year.
