Certification story

Flexi-Hex was born out of a love for the sea and a desire to design a packaging solution that doesn’t persist in the environment and negatively impacts the ocean. That’s why they created paper packaging that protects both products and the planet.

This is Flexi-Hex’s second year of business carbon footprint reporting and Planet Mark certification. Since certifying to Planet Mark, the company has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.

Achieving the Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“It’s a pleasure to being working with Flexi-Hex. The company has sustainability at its core, and is tapping into an area of huge public and environmental concern. The plastic that pollutes our oceans, and the carbon emissions the plastics industry puts into our atmosphere, are both hugely concerning, and Flexi-Hex is innovating to change the whole system. The team is dedicated to reducing its environmental impact, and is exactly the type of company that can drive positive change at scale.”

Flexi-Hex wants to be ambitious with its commitment to stewarding the earth – going past the idea of neutrality and lessening the amount of carbon in the atmosphere than when we started. The team is doing what it can to reduce its carbon emissions and where they cannot make reductions, Flexi-Hex is offsetting and contributing to rewilding projects. As the company grows and technology progresses, it will continue to adapt and change to ensure they are at the forefront of sustainable innovation.

The company pride itself on being a reliable and superior alternative to single-use plastics (such as bubble wrap and air-filled sacs) and strive towards having no impact on future generations. To date, with the help of our customers, Flexi-Hex has prevented over 1313km of plastic packaging from being used. This is equivalent to, as the crow flies, Porthleven to Lisbon.

They believe that good design should be practical, effective, attractive, and of course, sustainable. All its packaging solutions are built with strength in mind, are made using minimal material, and have a clean design that is easy to the eye. But most importantly, they are 100% plastic-free, recyclable and biodegradable.

Flexi-Hex use over 85% recycled paper pulp in our products, helping to close the loop and make the most of our “7th resource”, and where it’s not possible to use recycled material, we used FSC Certified paper. This means that all its products are curbside recyclable, and under the right conditions will biodegrade in 6 weeks, made possible by also using non-toxic adhesive. Using recycled paper has a lower carbon footprint than using virgin cardboard and each tonne of recycled paper we use can save 17 trees and 7000 gallons of water.

Looking beyond what its packaging is made of, Flexi-Hex also boasts fantastic volumetrics due to its compact natural state. In fact, one pallet of Flexi-Hex is equivalent to five pallets of bubble wrap, reducing shipping and storage costs, and ultimately the impact on our environment. Preventing over-packaging is one of Flexi-Hex’s top priorities when it comes to design. The Flexi-Hex sleeve is simply a single layer of protection that is strong enough to take impact alone, there is no need for reinforcement or multiple layers of wrap. Its outer-packaging, post-ready boxes are innovatively designed for simplicity, minimal material and waste. All their boxes are produced with a peal and seal element, removing the need for additional tape, and many have a glued crash-lock base so are completely tape free.

Public concern around the sustainability of packaging, from its carbon footprint to the impacts of single-use plastics on wildlife and oceans, is at an all-time high. This is driving a revolution in packaging. Regulators are moving on the issue, and FMCG companies are proactively making commitments to improve the sustainability of their packaging and rethink their supply chains. Packaging companies must learn to embrace this change, offering sustainable solutions to match the appetite of the market. This is imperative for both the health of a packaging business and for the planet.

Finally, Flexi-Hex wants to be ambitious with our commitment to stewarding the earth – the company is doing what it can to reduce its carbon emissions and where it cannot make reductions, we are offsetting and contributing to rewilding projects, enabling them to be a carbon neutral company.
