Certification story

The Council of British International Schools (COBIS), the premier global membership association for British schools overseas, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

COBIS is interested in promoting sustainable engagement throughout its schools, in both the pupils and its staff. This year it has invited its students to produce a short film showcasing a project they have carried out to improve the environmental sustainability of their school. The awards aim to develop students’ environmental awareness and empower them to take green actio

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“Congratulations to COBIS on an excellent year of sustainable progress. Emissions have been reduced significantly over the course of the year, but this is not the sum of COBIS’ actions. By leading from the front, they have given a stellar example to all of the staff and students across the world that COBIS represents. It is here that change can happen at real scale. Well done to the team for causing this powerful ripple effect.”
Colin Bell
CEO
COBIS
“We are proud to have achieved certification with Planet Mark for the third year running, and to continue to demonstrate our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint year on year. As an organisation focussed on helping schools and pupils thrive around the world, we are keen to lead by example in the international education community. By doing so, we are actively articulating the importance of sustainability and the need to recognise and respond to the climate emergency. We have one planet Earth, and it is vital that we teach the next generation how to protect and sustain it.”

There is a tremendous opportunity to shape a sustainable future in the education sector. The sector has a chance to provide direct training and education for the growing number of green jobs in forward-thinking economies. In addition, a broader awareness of sustainability is vital for climate action in wider society. Educational institutions can create a culture among staff, students, and stakeholders to think about how sustainability can impact the planet.

Going beyond

Through Planet Mark, COBIS has protected endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It is also helping the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year COBIS must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
