Certification story

The Council of British International Schools (COBIS), the premier global membership association for British schools overseas, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

This is COBIS’ second year of business carbon footprint reporting and certification to Planet Mark. It first calculated the carbon footprint of its London operational site for the year ending August 2019.

COBIS’ total carbon footprint for the year ending August 2020 was 61.9 tCO2e, a decrease of 29.5% from the year ending 2019. The relative carbon footprint was 1.2 tCO2e per employee, a decrease of 34.6% compared to the year ending 2019.

The carbon saved by COBIS this year has saved the same amount of carbon as taking 7 cars off the road.

“The results speak for themselves. This is a tremendous effort from COBIS, and is exactly the kind of story that inspires us at Planet Mark. It takes true dedication to the planet to make the kind of change COBIS has made. I’m immensely proud of the team’s efforts and look forward to even more positive development in the coming year.”
Steve Malkin
CEO
COBIS
“COBIS is delighted to have achieved this valuable certification for the second year, based on hitting our carbon reduction targets for the last period. With the global pandemic creating disruption and challenge for so many around the world, we are pleased to have the opportunity to demonstrate our continued commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. We are also thrilled that a number of our COBIS member schools have also made this commitment and joined Planet Mark, and we hope that many more will follow suit. We are proud of our valuable partnership with Planet Mark and look forward to our continued collaboration.”

Certification story

COBIS is interested in promoting sustainable engagement throughout its schools, in both the pupils and its staff. This year it has invited its students to produce a short film showcasing a project they have carried out to improve the environmental sustainability of their school. The awards aim to develop students’ environmental awareness and empower them to take green action.

There is a tremendous opportunity to shape a sustainable future in the education sector. The sector has an opportunity to provide direct training and education for the growing number of green jobs in forward-thinking economies. In addition, a wider awareness of sustainability is vital for climate action in wider society. Educational institutions can create a culture among staff, students and stakeholders in thinking about how sustainability can impact the planet.

Future targets

Reduce carbon footprint by 5% annually

As part of the Planet Mark certification, COBIS has committed to make a year-on-year reduction.
