Cardinal Global Logistics, a pioneering logistics firm with more than 20 years of experience, has achieved Planet Mark certification.
This is Cardinal’s first year of business carbon footprint reporting and Planet Mark certification. As part of certifying to Planet Mark, the company has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.
Cardinal’s total carbon footprint for the year ending December 2020 was 434.3 tCO2e. Cardinal’s total carbon per employee in the year ending 2020 was 1.8 tCO2e.
If Cardinal Global Logistics cuts its emissions by 5% over the coming year, it will save the same amount of carbon as preventing over 10 tonnes of coal from being burned.

“While our carbon emissions are relatively low compared to many sectors, the logistics industry does contribute a significant environmental impact, and we want to play our part in contributing to the UK Government’s targets of cutting greenhouse gases by 37% by 2020 and 80% by 2050, against 1990 levels. Having been accredited by Planet Mark, the very start of our process to activity decrease our carbon emissions, we have a number of targets for 2021/22 to continue our environmental work, and we look forward to progressing towards them.”
Cardinal Global Logistics has created a number of targets to facilitate its emissions reduction goal, including cutting operational carbon emissions by 10% and business travel emissions by 15%. The company is also aiming to purchase 100% of electricity from renewable sources, where possible, and migrate its existing fleet of vehicles, starting with company cars, to electric. Cardinal Global Logistics is also in the process of setting up an internal committee to manage to progress its sustainability and climate response.
The logistics industry has to rise to the challenge of a changing climate. As well as being an integral part of the supply chains causing large amounts of global emissions, a sustainable business model also makes good business sense. Climate change is a major topic of discussion at the board level for many of the world’s leading businesses, and action on climate will extend throughout their supply chains. The logistics industry must take heed of this signal of change and create low-carbon solutions for its work processes, for the planet, and for profitability.
