Bywaters, the UK’s most sustainable waste management company, helping businesses from all sectors reduce emissions and increase recycling rates, has achieved Planet Mark certification.
Achieving the Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.
This is Bywaters’ ninth year of business carbon footprint reporting and Planet Mark certification. It first calculated the carbon footprint of its head office, MRF and transfer station sites for the year ending December 2013.
Over the next year, the company will continue to reduce its carbon emissions and share its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, it will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.
Bywaters has also measured its social value contributions. This refers to the net social and environmental benefits generated by their team. Measuring social value gives a holistic insight into its positive contributions to not only the environment but also to society, demonstrating its commitment to meaningfully contribute to a better planet for all.
“Bywaters are stalwarts of the Planet Mark community, and have a fantastic, and deserved, reputation as sustainable pioneers. This year is like no other, with another fantastic reduction in emissions. The company goes beyond its own confines, helping others create sustainable solutions within their organisations. The power of collective action will drive change at a systemic level, and Bywaters embody this spirit entirely. Congratulations to the team on another stellar year of climate action.”
At the core of Bywaters is its commitment to sustainability. This goes beyond its own environmental initiatives and extends into working to improve the society in which we live. Bywaters has a dedicated team of Green Gurus who act as sustainability consultants for its clients, helping them on their sustainability journey. The company also takes an active approach to social responsibility, working with charities and communities to help create a better world. From beach cleaning to helping to provide free meals using food that would otherwise go to waste, the company is always trying to increase the positive impact it has as a UK company.
Waste management companies are well placed to engage businesses throughout the Decade of Action. As companies increasingly look to responsible waste processes, companies in the space can assist in a number of ways. First, offering sustainable waste services will become both a business and an environmental opportunity. Second, utilising expertise to help companies make sensible decisions, in both their waste and earlier in their supply chains, allows waste management companies to have an ecological impact well beyond their own operations.
Through Planet Mark, Bywaters has protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.
It has also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.
To recertify next year Bywaters must reduce emissions by 2.5%.
A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
