Achieving the Planet Mark certification marks a significant step for Bourne, the parent company of some of the UK’s most recognisable holiday resorts; Butlins, Warner Leisure Hotels and Haven Holidays. Bourne Leisure, the largest provider of holidays in the UK has already reduced its carbon by 44%.
Through Planet Mark, the company has protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth directly supports the Asháninka community in Central Peru.
It has also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.
“The team at Bourne live and breathe sustainability, and have put in place a truly holistic sustainability plan that goes far beyond compliance, encompassing its customers, suppliers, and local communities. Bourne has identified the most effective ways to reduce its carbon and environmental impact across its three brands and engage its guests in the process. Every guest at Bourne Leisure can enjoy their holiday, with the peace of mind that they are doing their bit for the planet.”
Future plans include investing in renewable technologies and purchasing electricity from zero carbon facilities. This will include providing electric vehicle charging points for guests and using electric vehicles. Through collaborative work with environmental agencies such as the Environment Agency, Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Natural Resources Wales, Bourne Leisure also aspires to remove single-use plastics from sites, streamline waste disposal and encourage biodiversity through the placement of independent beehives.
Bourne’s objectives are concurrent with The UK Government’s commitment to achieving Net Zero in carbon by 2050
