Believe Direct, one of the world’s leading digital music companies, helping artists and labels build their audiences and careers, has achieved Planet Mark certification.
This is Believe Direct’s first year of business carbon footprint reporting and Planet Mark certification. Since certifying to Planet Mark, the company has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.
Believe Direct’s total carbon footprint in the year ending December 2020 was 12.8 tCO2e. Believe Direct’s total carbon per employee in the year ending 2020 was 0.3 tCO2e.
“Musicians, and the music industry, have been at the forefront of so many social movements – and the climate movement is no different. Believe Direct is putting action behind these words, committing to measure and reduce its carbon every year. Only through bold and scientific action will we see the change necessary to prevent the worst effects of climate change. Believe Direct has become part of the solution.”
Believe Direct has made a number of environmental commitments beyond reducing its carbon footprint year-on-year. The company has protected an acre of endangered rainforest through a collaboration with conservation charity Cool Earth. Believe Direct has also committed to engaging its network of stakeholders in matters of sustainable change.
The music industry must join other industries in taking climate action. Beyond managing its own carbon footprint, the industry should recognise its capacity to create change among society as a whole. Messages of planetary care can only be believed if they are supported by recognisable action. Starting from artists, climate action must extend right through the industry’s supply chain.
As part of the Planet Mark certification, Believe has committed to making a year-on-year reduction.
