Certification story

BE Design, a designer of sustainable architectural, civil and structural engineering projects for organisations both in the UK and overseas, has achieved certification to Planet Mark.

BE Design’s total carbon footprint in the year ending December 2021 was 20.1 tCO2e, a 32% reduction from the previous year and the relative carbon footprint was 0.6 tCO2e per employee.

This is BE Design’s second year of business carbon footprint reporting and certification to Planet Mark. It first calculated the carbon footprint of its Newark operational site for the year ending December 2019 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.

Over the next year, the company will continue to work towards reducing its carbon emissions and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, it will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.

Steve Malkin
CEO
Planet Mark
“I’m so pleased to see BE Design join us at Planet Mark. The practice’s reputation in the industry speaks for itself; its team are the brains behind so many beautiful and sustainable places. But the team’s willingness to turn the focus of carbon emissions away from their designs and onto their own processes shows a dedication to genuine change. We need more pioneering practices like BE Design to take charge in the decade of climate action.”
Charlotte Booth
Associate Director
BE Design
“We wanted to start from within, to reduce our own carbon footprint and environmental impact, as well as improve the wellbeing of our people, projects and planet. Our passion as a business is to create a better world for us all, with sustainability at the heart of everything we do, so we are really pleased to have been awarded our certification from The Planet Mark.

Certification story

Certification to Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability within its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

BE Design is passionate about sustainable placemaking and is committed to improving the human experience through its designs. It takes a holistic approach, resulting in places to live, work, learn and play that have minimum environmental impact and maximum benefit to society. This is driven by its design philosophy of seven core sustainable principles. The firm is an industry leader in sustainable placemaking, reinforced by its involvement in industry groups such as the Constructing Excellence Sustainability and Innovation Group, CIBSE Homes for the Futures Group, London Energy Transformation Initiative and UK Green Building Council.

Owners and occupiers of buildings are becoming increasingly conscious of our responsibility to rapidly reduce carbon emissions, and of the environmentally friendly design principles that can help achieve carbon targets. Architects must stay ahead of the curve in order to respond to this changing demand. This can be achieved by designing sustainable places and by demonstrating a practice’s own sustainable credentials. Together, they show a robust sustainability offering that can become a vital asset in client acquisition.
