Bates Office Services, a supplier of a range of office productivity solutions, has achieved Planet Mark certification.
This is Bates Office Services’ first year of business carbon footprint reporting. Bates Office Services’ total carbon footprint in the year ending December 2019 was 1102.5 tCO2e and the relative carbon footprint was 9.0 tCO2e per employee.
It first calculated the carbon footprint of its Rochester, Crewe and Bridgend operational sites for the year ending December 2019 and set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually. Electricity accounts for 6.7% of the total carbon emissions, fleet travel accounts for 90%. Scope 1 emissions (Natural gas and fleet travel) accounts for 91% of total emissions.

First year certification to Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.
Bates Office Services provide customers with a range of office productivity solutions including Office Products, Office Furniture, Design and Print, MPS, Janitorial and Sanitary Services, PPE and Workwear, Waste Management, Confidential Waste Disposal and Archiving.
The company has made significant steps towards becoming a sustainable business. Bates Office Services was the first independent business in its sector to achieve ISO 14001 for Environmental Management. Since then, its successful Zero Waste initiative saw a ‘whole business’ strategy to reduce and reuse waste, and lead to the creation of the first fairtrade, sustainable office paper made from agricultural waste straw. Furthermore, policies on reduced vehicle usage and carbon offsetting have helped in reducing the impact of the company and its supply chain.
The world of business is quickly becoming more knowledgeable about its role in climate change, and many are requiring strong sustainability standards from their supply chains. B2B companies and suppliers must do more to demonstrate their robust sustainability credentials, for both the planet and for their businesses.
