Certification story

Axminster Tools, a provider of machinery and workshop consumables has achieved the Planet Mark certification. In this crucial Decade of Action, the company wants to ensure that it is a force for good: positively transforming society and the planet by measuring its own impact on the environment. It wants to do everything it can to reduce its carbon footprint and the impact it has on the environment as well as seek new ways to support a sustainable environment.

Achieving Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders. Over the next year, it will be working towards reducing its environmental impact and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others.

Axminster Tools already aims to reuse, recycle or upcycle as much as it can and it has been operating its main office and distribution centre on a ‘zero to landfill’ basis since 2014. In 2016, it introduces a car sharing scheme, incentivising staff to reduce the number of cars on the road, fuel being used and level of emissions.

The company also has ambitions to tackle plastic pollution. It has reduced the amount of plastic in the packaging of its own products and has replaced this with cardboard. Going one step further, Axminster Tools shreds all waste cardboard and uses this instead of bubble wrap as protective packaging when it sends out parcels.

Going beyond

As part of achieving the Planet Mark certification, Axminster Tools has protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It has also donated to the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year Axinster Tools must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
